Kativik Ilisarniliriniq is a school board offering educational services in the 14 communities of Nunavik.

FUNCTION & DUTIES:

The principal and customary work of an employee in this class of employment consists in interpreting for deaf or hard of hearing students the spoken message of those with whom the students must communicate during classes or other school activities.

The employee in this class of employment interprets simultaneously the spoken message of teachers or other persons during classes or other school activities of deaf or hard of hearing students using different methods of communication. In addition, he or she interprets simultaneously the student’s message to these same people.  He or she helps students in order to facilitate their learning and their educational and social integration.

He or she may be required to provide appropriate assistance to a student who, in addition to his or her hearing impairment, experiences social maladjustments or learning disabilities.  He or she may be required to participate in various meetings to agree on signs to be used for concepts that have not yet been interpreted or in meetings designed to prepare an individualized education plan in order to convey his or her observations with regard to the behaviour, social maladjustments or learning disabilities of a student and applies the measures selected within the scope of his or her functions

If need be, he or she performs any other related duty.

Supervisor:  School Principal.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Hold a diploma of college studies in a technique appropriate for the class of employment or a diploma or an attestation of studies recognized as equivalent by the competent authority and, preferably have two (2) years of experience in interpreting.

The Board may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the afore-mentioned qualifications if it finds a suitable candidate who is a beneficiary of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement (JBNQA) and who accepts, as a condition of employment, to follow a training plan determined by the Board.

REQUIREMENTS:

Training as an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter or equivalent knowledge of the language;

Experience working with severely hearing-impaired students integrated into a regular classroom;

Good command of spoken and written English.

WORK SCHEDULE: From Monday to Friday, 35 hours/week.

CLASSIFICATION / SALARY / BENEFITS:

In accordance with the AENQ collective agreement for support staff / from $22,02 to $31,37 an hour depending on qualification and experience.

All benefits are prorated based on the percentage of the task.

DEAFBLIND INTERVENOR EDUCATION ASSISTANT

The Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District (SD42) is looking for a qualified Education Assistant with Deafblind Intervention Certification to work at Kanaka Creek Elementary school effective September 1, 2018. This position involves working with a student who has dual sensory loss (hearing and vision) resulting in significant difficulties in orientation, mobility, and accessing environmental information.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful completion of Grade 12 plus the Special Education Teaching Assistant program or equivalent plus successful experience working with individuals with special needs

Successful completion of the Deafblind Intervenor Training Program through the Provincial Outreach Program for Students with Deafblindness

Be adept at managing amplification equipment and have proficiency in ASL with the ability to adjust to the signing, educational and communication levels of the student

Skills will be used regarding personal care and lifting

Rate of pay: $27.97 per hour + 4% premium to the hourly wage

*Please note that Kanaka Creek Elementary works on a Balanced Calendar

INTRODUCTION

The Centre Collégial de Soutien à l’Intégration (CCSI) of Cégep du Vieux Montréal is an organisation recognized for its expertise in college advisory services and its sign language interpretation service in higher education. The CCSI assists public and private colleges in terms of sign language interpreting services; these services are also offered to several universities in the province of Québec.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The primary role of the person in this job category is to both interpret courses and other activities related to student life, as well as to facilitate the interaction between the staff in colleges or universities and students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The interpreter will be called to interpret in colleges and universities in the Greater Montreal area.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

 Interprets classes and other activities related to student life using the different methods and languages of communication generally used by students who are deaf or hard of hearing: American Sign Language (ASL), pidgin, oral or any other method that may facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and hearing persons; the interpreter finds the appropriate means to ensure effective communication;

 Participates in various activities related to interpreter professional development. The interpreter contributes to the process of creation and preservation of technical signs;

 May be asked to interpret texts, participate in information sessions for students, teachers and other stakeholders, as well as write promotional materials. In general, the interpreter facilitates interaction between the various stakeholders in colleges and the hearing impaired;

 May be required to introduce less experienced interpreters as well as coordinate the work of other staff involved in the delivery of related programs or technical operations;

 Performs other related duties as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

 College diploma with appropriate field of specialization or any other diploma recognized as equivalent by the appropriate authority and two (2) years of interpreting experience with deaf or hard of hearing persons;

 Excellent knowledge of the English language and the American Sign Language (A.S.L.) and techniques related to oral interpretation.

REQUIRED EVALUATION

Candidates will be subject to an evaluation of their linguistic and interpretative skills of A.S.L. to English and English to A.S.L. during the month of June 2018. The start date will be at the end of August 2018.

> WORK LOCATION: Cégep du Vieux Montréal, 255, Ontario East, Montréal, H2X 1X6

> POSITION STATUS: Regular Full-time

>WORK SCHEDULE: 35 hrs/week. The schedule is determined at the beginning of each semester in accordance with the service’s needs.
