Thomas Fricke/CMHR

American Sign Language Anniversary

American Sign Language (ASL) is spoken by thousands of people across Canada, and is one of the cornerstones of Deaf culture and identity for many Canadians.

On May 17, join us for a celebration of the 200th anniversary of ASL!

The Magic of ASL

We present musical and theatrical performances in Bonnie & John Buhler Hall.

6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Bonnie & John Buhler Hall on Level 1

Deaf Culture is expressed in many ways! Join us for an evening celebrating the diversity of the Deaf community. There will be performances by the student drumming group from the Manitoba School for the Deaf, 100 Decibels Deaf mime troupe, and theatrical performances by ASL story-teller David Burke and students from the Deaf Studies program at Red River College. Explore the past oppression and subsequent revitalization of ASL.

This program is free.

The Public Relations co-directors hosts an ASL Night once a month.  This is an informal evening to gather with members of the Deaf community, interpreting community and student community to connect and enjoy using ASL together.  The next ASL Night is on Thursday, April 20 beginning at 7:00.  It is at the Boston Pizza at Portage and Moray (2517 Portage Ave).  There is no entrance fee, and you have the option to order anything you would like off the menu.

Bumps, Breakthroughs & Bloopers!

MAVLI will be hosting,
“Bumps, Breakthroughs & Bloopers!”

at Sam’s Place on April 13th, 2017 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.

No matter if you are an AEIP student, recent grad or seasoned interpreter, we are all on a journey of continual learning.  We all encounter bumps in the road, have those moments of breakthroughs and have those interpreting bloopers (be they unpredicted mishaps or just old fashioned mis-interpretations)!

Please join us in celebrating successes, bonding over our common challenges and hopefully laughing at our bloopers. We’d all love to hear your experiences and stories!  The great thing about being a part of our ASL-English interpreting community is that you are never alone.

We look forward to an evening of coffee/tea and stimulating conversation!

Please see the following announcement regarding the Magic of ASL from Mandy MacDonald.
